Eco-Friendly Dry Cleaning
Environmentally Friendly Dry Cleaning Solution - 17/03/07
Traditional dry-cleaning uses perchloroethylene (perc) - a chlorinated solvent. The eco-friendly option to this is a siloxane based solution rather than the harmful perc solvent. Siloxane is an abundant element found on the earth, its most common form being silica (sand).
Perchloroethylene (perc) has been the main solvent used in the dry cleaning industry for 50 years. Whilst it has very good cleaning performance, it can be very harmful to some fabrics (especially some types of decoration) and some dyes can even run.
More alarmingly, should Perc be released into the atmosphere, it has the hazardous potential to be a persistent pollutant of the ground or aquatic environment. This is a very real threat even though there are rigorous controls in place on Perc's use and handling.
The eco-friendly solution is not only better for the environment it is also gentler on fabrics with softer handling, no harsh chemical odours and no colour running or fading.
